Footnotes

* Viollet-le-Duc is also famous for his restoration of the medieval Château de Pierrefonds, on the edge of the Forest of Compiègne, northeast of Paris, and of the Cité de Carcassonne citadel, in the former Languedoc province in the south of France.

* The concept of the passage was adopted by other cities in France (for example, the impressive Passage Pommeraye in Nantes, built between 1841 and 1843) and abroad through the end of the nineteenth century. The Burlington Arcade in London, however, opened in 1819. The ultimate gallery is the enormous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan (1867).

* Descendants whom so-called Orléaniste monarchists consider to be the rightful pretenders to the throne hold the title Count of Paris, reviving the Carolingian title (e.g., the late Henri d’Orléans [1933–2019], Comte de Paris). Royalists who support the claim to the throne of descendants of Charles X are known as légitimistes.
